What do we mean by inside and out?

We have treated well over 16,000 clients, and as a result, we have the experience and expertise to build a solid understanding of the causes of most pain. What we have learnt, over and over again, is that pain in the musculoskeletal structure, the bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, is quite often linked to or even a direct result of mental and health issues.

For example, we have found that a person’s chronic back pain was directly linked to childhood trauma. By resolving that trauma, the chronic back pain disappeared.

Similarly, we look at each client’s overall health with four key measures of

• Mindset
• Diet & nutrition
• Fitness
• Lifestyle

and the measures are simplified into easily understood red, amber and green traffic lights. Our goal is to move clients to four green keys. Importantly we understand that the treatment provided must be in line with the client's health status. For example, some treatments would be contraindicated at four red keys but appropriate at a mixture of amber and green keys.

Hence optimised results can only be achieved by treatment inside and out.

Physiotherapy Is Dividing And You Need To Make Sure You Choose The Right Road To Follow

I have researched relentlessly for many years to find the most effective and up to date knowledge on how to achieve the best outcome for our clients. This journey has consistently proven the need humans have for social contact and touch. For example, it has been proven that by far the most important factor which improves life span and health span is having a strong network of friends and family, with whom you have consistent face to face contact and can share worries and problems.

The COVID pandemic in 2020 utterly destroyed this key factor and although the pandemic is in the past, its impact continues to this day with increased numbers working from home, the younger generation increasingly relying on remote and non beneficial contact via a computer or phone and the older generation restricting their contact to smaller groups or even avoiding contact altogether.

The result of this is that so many people are desperate for more social contact and crave physical touch, so much so, I am overwhelmed by the relentless wave after wave of need to fill this cavernous void.

I am seeing so many examples of patients attending with feelings of despair, anxiety, depression, fear, lack of love and loneliness and these feeling are all presenting as aspects of physical pain being stored in the body and not in the mind. This is why physical touch and listening are so important. The therapist has to listen intently to the patients’ emotions as they feel the associated pain in the physical body.

Physiotherapy has its roots in physical touch and has over the last century evolved to be more scientifically based and has access to an ever increasing selection of new technologies, all of which should mean more successful outcomes for patients. The problem is that for most people, their interaction with physiotherapy is via the NHS, who are very much moving away from any physical contact and are in many cases simply prescribing exercises over the phone. This, in my experience, is the exact opposite of what the public needs and my view seems to be supported by an article published in the Daily Mail on 2^nd December 2023 which was very critical of the physiotherapy services offered by the NHS.

My own research forced me many years ago to start looking outside the box of conventional Western thinking, because the latter had failed my family. For many years since, it has been overtly clear that other significant factors, such as what’s going on in the patients' minds, what’s going on in their lives, how good or bad their diet is and lastly, how fit they are, all have a significant impact on the achievement of a successful outcome. That’s why I developed my 4 Keys To Health model along with a simple-to-understand traffic light system.

To help explain, compare a patient with four red keys to another who has 4 green keys. I can assure you the former is going to need more treatment to achieve the same improvement as the latter. Not only that, a certain type of treatment might be perfect for a four-green keyholder but contraindicated with a four-red keyholder.

The message here is that for really effective physiotherapy treatment, it has to be hands-on. As a private clinic, we wouldn’t even consider an exercise-only option, and we are concerned that such an approach if used broadly, could change opinion sufficiently to prompt the public to start questioning the merits of physiotherapy as a whole.

Private clinics right across the country continue to offer the broad capability of hands-on physiotherapy treatment, and, certainly, at my clinic, this is a cornerstone of the services and capability we offer as we continue to search for and adopt the most effective practices possible.
