The ankle and foot consist of a large number of bones whose task is to provide shock absorption, stability and propulsion through the normal gait cycle of walking or running.

The normal gait is for a heel strike followed by rolling onto the outside of the foot, then back to the inside of the foot with propulsion mainly through the big toe. The mid stance bone positioning requires flexibility and shock absorption, whereas the propulsion phase requires rigidity and stability.

The ankle has a number of strong ligaments around it to provide strength and stability, without which twisted ankles and broken bones would be much more common.
